Having a small apartment is really hard to prevent from getting cluttered.
You don’t want to waste your money on a storage unit (or worse, people steal your stuff!). After I got married, our apartment turned into one huge dumping ground for our stuff.
Items left over from our wedding, our luggage from our honeymoon, and wedding registry gifts, It was to the point where I couldn’t follow my normal cleaning schedule.
If you’re anything like me and are really struggling to gain more space in your apartment (or a small home), then let’s get into some apartment storage tips I tried. So you can try it out too!
This post is about apartment storage tips.
How Do I Maximize My Apartment Storage?
You can maximize your apartment storage space in so many ways (without purchasing a storage unit) but first, let’s look into what we should do first BEFORE looking into any storage ideas.
Start Getting Rid Of Things
In order to gain more space, we have to let things go. Decluttering your apartment is a great way to make an assessment of which areas can fit more things.
Plus after all the decluttering is done, you’ll realize that not a lot of stuff needs to be put in storage.
Assess Your Needs
Now that you decluttered and you still find you’re place is crowded. Look into assessing your place.
Take a walk around and ask yourself these questions;
- Where do you need the most storage?
- What kind of items do you need to purchase to help with the clutter?
- Do I just need containers and if so what type?
After going through this assessment you’ll have enough information to know how to start storing your belongings.
Get Creative
This is the perfect time to get creative on how you want to store your items. For example; repurpose furniture and items that you have.
This could be reusing baskets in different areas of your home, or using the extra space underneath your coffee table as a storage area for the TV items.
Another way you can be creative is to use corners! The corners in your home are a great way to store items. It could be resting storage bins there or installing shelves.
Lastly, utilize vertical space. Meaning stacking your items from top to bottom. This helps with making your space look bigger.
What If I Can’t Use The Stuff I Have Now?

Apartment Storage Products You Need!
Multi-Functional Couch
One of the BEST investments I ever made on my couch. Really helps with storing my living room items. My couch has built-in storage for blankets and throws pillows. As well as opens into a futon. Great for when guests come over to stay.
We got our couch off Wayfair (Sadly the style is discontinued)
Clear Containers
Small Clear containers are perfect for storing items and seeing what it’s inside. This is great for cleaning products, and toys.
I have a set of small clear containers reesting inside of my linen closets. easy to get each time I need anything.
Kitchen Appliance Cart
This has been on my wishlist for MONTHS (hubby if you ever read this hint). We have so many appliances in our kitchen that we just keep them inside their original packaging.
Although the problem is that the boxes are so bulky to store away and such a hassle to get the appliance out of the box when you need it.
A kitchen appliance cart is great for people who frequently use appliances to cook and bake.
Under Bed Storage
If you have space underneath your bed, this is a great apartment storage idea you can check out. You can place seasonal clothing, shoes, or even linen inside the bed storage.
Hooks
Hooks are such a multi-use item that can be used for anything in your apartment. You can install hooks to hang your oven mitts in the kitchen, a place to put your keys, or even in the bathroom to hold your towels.
Multi-Functional Hangers
Find your jeans are taking a lot of paces inside of your dresser? Grab a few multi-functional hangers! These hangers can hang between 2-3 pairs of jeans at a time. Perfect for gaining space and a great use for your closet.
End Tables With Drawers
If you look on my side of the bed you’ll see a whole bunch of my stuff pile on top of each other because our nightstands don’t have drawers!
Similar to the couch, look into purchasing multi-functional furniture for style and added storage.
Plastic Drawer Cart
My husband and I share a workspace. In between us, we have a plastic drawer cart that holds our printer on top and any office supplies we need.
You can use a drawer cart to organize linen, children’s toys, and any hobby items.
Overall…
In order to gain back space you have to store your belongings efficiently. Keep some items within your reach, let go of a few belongings you have and just organize!
