Summertime is always busy for us. My husband works overtime a lot, we visit new places. We really try to get the most out of the warm weather (Struggles of living in Canada).
So our major cleaning is not done during this season (Plus the heat waves are no joke!)
The weather is getting colder, the kids are going back to school. The Pumpkin Spice Latte is back at Starbucks. This means the summer is starting to come to an end and fall is around the corner.
This means it’s time to start thinking about our end-of-summer cleaning routine
I wanted to share with you my end of summer cleaning routine that I do when the fall weather is fastly approaching.

End of Summer Cleaning Checklist
1. Plan a day to start your cleaning
Depending on how large your home is, you want to plan a week in advance to get your task done. This could be within one weekend, or possibly two. It’s entirely up to your schedule!
Please try to limit the idea of deep cleaning your house all in one day, you’ll be extremely tired and will do a half-done job. Take your time!
2. Write a list of things you need to clean
Break down each room and decide which area needs cleaning. This could include; dusting, moving furniture, moping, etc.
Here is a list of common places you can clean at the end of the summer season;
- Dust everywhere top to bottom
- wipe down windows
- take down curtains and wash them
- wipe baseboards
- change the filter inside your furnace
- Put away seasonal items
- Clean your grill
- Wash outdoor furniture
- Check lawn mower for potential maintenance
- Clean the inside and outside of your car
Your checklist will entirely depend on what you haven’t cleaned since the summer started and what areas need tackling before the cold season hits.
If you want I have added a cleaning checklist for you to use!
3. Tackle The Rooms You Least Want To Do
Have you ever left the room you wanted to clean the least, and end up not doing it? *raises hand* I am a victim of doing this!
So instead I always start cleaning the room I disliked the most (the bathroom). Then I noticed I was able to power through and clean the rest of my apartment.
Orr, you can do the opposite: you can tackle the room you enjoy cleaning the most! This can also brighten your mood and motivate you to clean the rest of your home.
4. Declutter as You Go!
I can’t be the only one who starts deep cleaning then all of a sudden you start going down memory lane and begin finding little trinkets from 5 years ago.
Take the time to declutter while you’re deep cleaning. This could include; old receipts, plastic bags, random items you left around after a night out. See if those items are worth keeping or just throwing them out!
Decluttering is great to do at the end of a season because you’ll be more prone to take the items to the donation center now versus when the cold season comes in.
5. Donate
While you’re decluttering, have a box labeled “Donate” and start giving away some items that you don’t need.
Such as; clothes you have never worn for the season, books you haven’t touched in over a year.
Anything you haven’t used or worn and don’t plan on using should be given away.
This is beneficial because a) you just created more space b) This means you can add more clothes to your wardrobe!!
6. Fix any Repairs You Have Been Procrastinating
And yes, it’s the one that just crossed your mind right now. We all have that list of repairs we need to get over with, why not do it now?
After you clean a room, look around and see if any repairs need to be done. This could be a loose screw, a broken drawer, or a simple light bulb change.
TIP: Don’t have time to tackle those repairs right now? Create a list! Then plan a day to get those repairs done (You can even recruit your partner for help!)
7. Try to have some fun!
Sometimes doing a large amount of cleaning can get boring. This is why we procrastinate it!
I found listening to music and/or a podcast really helps make the time go faster and more enjoyable.
8. Bring out the Seasonal Decor!
Now that your place is neat and tidy, it’s time to bring out the decor!! Bring on the pumpkins, the fall leaves, everything! Even your Fall clothes!
